The East Stormwater Pond, located in the City of Lacombe’s Eastside Recreation Area just east of the Lacombe Police Station, has just completed a major upgrade project. Throughout the summer, volunteers and vendors sought to greatly increase the success and accessibility of fishing this less well known urban pond. Thanks to the City of Lacombe’s construction of the Eastside Recreation Dog Park located just east of the pond, a new 24 car parking lot has been added. Anglers can utilize this parking area to have more convenient walk in access to the pond. The Alberta Conservation Association Conservation, Community and Education Grants funded a large portion of the major upgrades to the pond. The project was managed and implemented by the LFGA, with additional funding requirements covered by the LFGA. First, LFGA volunteers installed a new floating dock and five casting platforms. The new docks and casting platforms will result in greater accessibility to the water body, increase chances to get to deeper water and allow for a more pleasant fishing experience. Secondly, staff at Smoky Trout Farms installed a new mechanical aeration system in the pond. This system should greatly improve the water quality of the pond, which will allow for more active fish and higher survivability.
Third, a large storm water culvert prevented anglers from being able to walk around the full perimeter of the pond. As such, Comet Welding constructed a bridge to fix this accessibility problem.
